Queues (line ups) have become more permanent everyday social structures. The idea of standing motionlessly or with notional movement is a significant act of fortitude, which Chiko salutes in his artworks. The acrylic-based works featured here are inspired by how we queue up for commodities and the ways in which we line up for one thing or the other in urban settings. Through these works, Chiko explores our movements of systematised consumerism as extensions of these urban queues.
“Traditional” artistic media has helped formulate Chiko’s point of departure. The artist presents these ideas through layers of ambiguous imagery that float between the dynamics of recycling, painting, and seemingly unguided registration, inspired by his printmaking background. Chiko has also woven stripes of pop can material to emphasize the idea of consumerism, the very element that has changed and shifted our notions of happiness and freedom, identity and even democracy.
