Traveling to new and unfamiliar places has given me an opportunity to experience a reality that feels closer to a fairy tale or a dream. The combination of new sights, smells, and languages plays with my imagination and memory.
It’s this experience that inspired me to create collections that weave glimpses of far-off places with fantasy, and combines my passions for photography, art, and travel. These pieces contain decorative layers that turn ordinary things and places into surreal wanderings through an imaginary world.
“Horse Dreams” is a very personal piece; without intending to do so, I chose two images from our wedding day in Belfast and one from our honeymoon road trip around Ireland. The golden arch and lights in the top left of the piece are the domed ceiling and chandelier in Belfast City Hall; I took this photograph about 10 minutes after we were married there. The whimsical strings of lights and abstract gold and pink shapes are from AM:PM, the amazing restaurant around the corner from the City Hall where we had lunch after our ceremony. The walls of the restaurant are covered in colourful fake flowers and ornate gold-framed art. The ceilings are full of little chandeliers and dripping with strings of beads and “fairy lights”. The scene of the horses grazing on the field above the ocean and beach was in County Cork. We spent a magical week and a half driving around Ireland for our honeymoon, taking hundreds of pictures as we went. This spot was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. The end result is a piece that tells a story of fairytale romance, of taking chances and believing in unbelievable dreams. Of unicorns and fairy dust. Of following your heart when it says “What if…?”
