“Cosmos” references at once a familiar ornamental flower, and the concept of the universe, or earth, as a harmonious system of delicate interrelationships, and ordered balance.
The horizontal panel reveals a gardenscape microcosm, resplendent with life, movement, colour, and the activity of pollination. We find ourselves looking up, through the flowers, towards the sky, as lying in a field or in a rooftop garden, aware of both the vastness of the universe and our connectedness to all that surrounds us. Time is collapsed and layered, showing variously pigmented flowers in all stages of the lifecycle from bud to bloom to seed and stalk. We are reminded of a vital, diverse, organic community, young and old, established and newly introduced, but blowing in the same wind, rooted in the same soil, and inherently connected to one another.
The bees’ industrious travel, both seeking nourishment and allowing for the possibility of new life and fruition, recalls necessary and optimistic human migration, while the cosmos, a migrant species itself which grows tall and strong in Toronto gardens, reminds us of the nurturing power of a hospitable place to land.
