Laura graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2006 and received her BFA in drawing and painting. She has completed numerous commissions and has been featured in various juried art shows in the Greater Toronto Area and Osaka, Japan (where she lived for four years). Some of her art related jobs included working as a live caricature artist and as a studio enhancer at a high-end art reproduction company. She has been featured in several online art blogs including Juxtapoz and Illustration Friday, and she is currently one of the featured illustrators in 3 x 3's New Talent online gallery. She currently works at one of the Akin Collective studio locations in downtown Toronto.
As an illustrator, my aim is to depict seemingly ordinary moments of human life in various urban settings, and present them to viewers in a way that is easily relatable by evoking a sense of familiarity and connection with their shared experiences. I strive to accomplish this goal both through the universal subject matter of my drawings and in the high level of specific detail in their particular environments and contexts.
My mixed-media drawings are usually done with ink-on-paper, then are coloured in with Photoshop, watercolour, acrylic paint and a variety of other materials. A number of my illustrations have a focus on portraiture, and are often based on my experiences traveling in countries such as Japan, China, Korea, New Zealand and Australia. My current drawings focus more on various settings in the Greater Toronto Area, particularly on the eclectic urban canvases found downtown.
